Clayton’s direction was so well crafted that the tricks used to tell the story become invisible, that is until you watch it again. Everyone is elevated to a high level by Clayton’s genius camera direction. Both actresses do a great job, as does the rest of the cast. The initial plan was for Maxine to be dubbed over the mouth movement of Donna, but Donna had been listening to Maxine so often during the shoot that she was able to mimic Donna’s voice. Janet Taylor was voiced by Maxine Stuart while she was wrapped in bandages, and for her big reveal, she was played by Donna Douglas. It’s so creepy, eerie, and dark that when you’re in the right mood, it becomes the most perfect thing to just pour yourself into.

I still love this episode as much as when I first watched it. I remember getting so excited when he would say something like that, because I knew I was in for a trip to remember. I remember watching this episode when I was a kid, and it was another one where dad said “oh, this is a good one”. Did it work? Will she finally find happiness? Watch to find out! She would live out her pitiful nightmare of a life surrounded by things so disgusting that they live in a secluded hell of their own. The majority of the episode ruminates on her fears of the surgery being a disaster, for if this procedure doesn’t work, she will be sent to a village of equally hideous monster people. She is so horrid, that she has lived her whole life dealing with oppressive ridicule and alienation. This episode focuses on Janet Tyler, a woman who has recently undergone massive surgery to fix her horribly mangled face. “The Eye of the Beholder” was the 6th episode of season 2, and aired on Armistice Day, 1960. Clayton, who claims that this was one of the most difficult episodes to shoot, and you’ll understand why as you watch it.
